MOTOROLA'S CELLULAR INFRASTRUCTURE GROUP AWARDED PROVINCE-WIDE
EQUIPMENT ORDER BY PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The People's Republic of China announced today that it has awarded a supply contract for cellular infrastructure equipment to Motorola's Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Cellular Infrastructure Group.
"This is by far the largest single cellular order in terms of contract value and future potential for the People's Republic of China," said Tu Yong-he, deputy director of Posts and Telecommunications (PTA) of Zhejiang Province. "Under this contract, Motorola will supply five EMX (Electronic Mobile Exchange) 250 series switches to be installed in five cities within the Zhejiang province." Those cities include: Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Shaoxing, Ningbo and Wenzhou. Zhejiang has a population of approximately 43 million people.
"We are pleased to have selected Motorola as a system supplier for our provincial cellular systems and Zhejiang PTA is planning to have system expansion and a few system add-ons in the province in the near future," continued Tu. "The goal is for Zhejiang PTA to have the province-wide cellular network completed in the eighth five-year plan." The five-year plan first began in 1953 under the China Economic Development Act. The eighth five-year plan runs from 1991 to 1995.
According to Tu, the Zhejiang PTA will receive cellular infrastructure equipment from Motorola through the Hangzhou Communication Equipment Factory (HCEF) of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT). HCEF is the only licensed factory in the People's Republic of China which assembles Motorola infrastructure and subscriber equipment.
"Today's announcement is quite significant for Motorola," said Pertti Johansson, vice president and director of Motorola's International Cellular Infrastructure Division. "We are very pleased by China's selection of our infrastructure equipment. Motorola currently supplies cellular infrastructure equipment to nine Chinese provinces and cities including adjacent Shanghai and the provinces of Fujian and Shandong. With the combination of the five new switches in Zhejiang, the three in Fujian, the five in Shandong and the continuous expansion occuring in Shanghai, a 'beltway of commerce' and roamers will be serviced in this area of China. Motorola is negotiating to provide another two EMX 500 systems for the province of Jiangsu, which is also adjacent to Zhejiang."
Said Weng Lihua, deputy secretary general of Zhejiang Provincial Government, "The Motorola supplied province-wide cellular network will no doubt contribute greatly to the economic development in the province, which is the most flourishing economic zone in China. Additional rapid development is expected to take place in this key province."
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular systems, infrastructure equipment and subscriber products. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for worldwide markets.
