AUSTIN, Texas, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Microprocessor and Memory Technologies Group of Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced that its 33-MHz 68040 provides the processing power for Apple(R) Computer, Inc's new Macintosh Quadra(tm) 950 personal computer. The powerful Macintosh Quadra 950 offers users an unprecedented levels of performance, flexibility and expansion options.
"The speeds that the Macintosh Quadra 950 achieves through the use of the 33-MHz 68040 are extremely impressive and exceed those of comparable Intel-based systems," said Jim Reinhart manager, M68000 marketing and applications. "This announcement illustrates Apple and Motorola's commitment to providing the high performance personal computer systems that users demand."
By utilizing the power of the 33-MHz 68040 microprocessor, the MacIntosh Quadra 950 scored a 9.7 on benchmark tests conducted by Ingram Labs, a Torrance, Calif.-based research laboratory and subsidiary of Ingram/Micro. These tests compared cross-platform applications on the Macintosh Quadra and on PCs running Microsoft Windows. A 9.7 score means the Macintosh Quadra runs 9.7 times faster than the slowest machine tested (the IBM PS/1). Based on these benchmarks, the Macintosh Quadra 950 runs applications up to 20 percent faster than comparable 486 50-MHz Intel-based systems (ALR Business Visa 486/50). The speed enhancements are also attributed to faster graphics architecture, and improved SCSI (small computer system interface) and NuBus capabilities.
Motorola's 33-MHz 68040 is an advanced, high throughput single- chip microprocessor, featuring 1.2 million transistors. It achieves a sustained execution of 29 MIPS (million instructions per second) and 4.6 MFLOPS (million floating operations per second) at 33-MHz.
The 68040-based Macintosh Quadra 950 comes equipped with 8MB of RAM (random access memory) and is expandable to 64 MB, enabling users to work with larger files and numerous open applications. The Macintosh Quadra 950 also features built-in networking, allowing users to plug their system directly into high-speed Ethernet or LocalTalk networks without having to buy additional cards. Built-in support for all Apple monitors is also included.
Other expansion options in the Macintosh Quadra 950 include 10 built-in ports for peripherals, giving users access to printers, scanners and high capacity disk drives; five NuBus expansion slots, providing users with the ability to customize their own systems with specialized NuBus cards; and support for up to four storage devices.
The Macintosh Quadra 950 is available immediately worldwide through Apple dealers and resellers.
