 MOTHERWELL RELEASES NEW HOME-EXERCISE VIDEO
 FOR EXPECTANT AND NEW MOTHERS
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Expectant and new mothers benefit from physical exercise, but exercise goals need to be different from regular fitness programs.
Women need to follow special guidelines to ensure maternal and fetal well-being.
"Standard fitness programs have goals which are likely to conflict or fail to make adjustments necessary for the changing physical demands of pregnancy," said Bonnie Berk, RN, BS, CES, a nationally recognized specialist in maternity health and fitness.
Berk is co-founder of Motherwell(R), a maternity fitness program offered through 100 hospitals nationwide. She announced the release of a new Motherwell home-exercise video -- the first medically approved, research-based video to address the specific fitness needs of expectant and new mothers.
Among tips for expectant and new mothers:
-- Moderate exercise is beneficial; stressful exercise should be avoided. Heart rate should not exceed 140 beats per minute.
-- Watch for a changing center of balance. Pregnancy creates a shift in the center of gravity.
-- Don't exercise to lose weight -- weight gain is important.
-- Don't become dehydrated. Dehydration has been associated with premature labor.
-- Don't stress joints. Due to hormonal changes, joints are more susceptible to injury.
"The new exercise goals include exercising in ways that are safe, relieving discomforts associated with pregnancy, as well as easing back into exercise after giving birth," said Berk.
The Motherwell video is approximately 90 minutes long and has four sections: Exercises (55); Relaxation (18); Nutrition Information (5); Abdominal Strengthening (7). There is also an information booklet enclosed.
