MOTHERS WORK, INC. ANNOUNCES JULY AND AUGUST SALES RESULTS

 PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mothers Work, Inc. (NASDAQ: MWRK) today announced sales results for the months of July and August 1993.
 Sales for July were $2.6 million, up 63 percent from $1.6 million the prior year, and sales for August were $3.0 million, up 58 percent from $1.9 million the prior year.
 Same store sales for July decreased 4.7 percent from the prior year, and for August decreased 17.9 percent from the prior year. New stores posted similarly disappointing results in a difficult retailing environment.
 The company opened five stores in July and seven stores in August, bringing the total number of stores to 90 as of Aug. 31, 1993. Of the 90 stores, 46 were open a year ago, and included in the same store results for the July/August period. While the 44 stores opened during the last 12 months performed below the company's expectations during the two month period, on average the newer stores achieved 15 percent higher sales per store than the older stores.
 Gross margin percentage in the two month period continued to exceed gross margin percentage for the comparable period in the prior year.
 Mothers Work is a leading specialty retailer of upscale maternity clothing. It currently has 92 stores located primarily in upscale regional malls across the country, and it manufactures most of its full range of career, casual and special occasion maternity wear at its Philadelphia headquarters. The company operates two store formats, Mothers Work (69 stores) and Mimi Maternity (23 stores).
