MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING ISSUES NEWS CONFERENCE STATEMENT
 ON PROJECT LIFERIDE
DETROIT, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), regarding a news conference which began at 10 a.m. today:
The purpose of this press conference is to announce details for the 9th Annual Project LifeRide on New Year's Eve. Project LifeRide is again being co-sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and 104.3 FM WOMC Radio. Essentially, we hope to provide a free taxi ride home for anyone in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties who may be too intoxicated to drive safely and who has not arranged a safe ride home in advance.
Restaurants, taverns and hosts of private parties can arrange "liferides" for any impaired patron or guest by calling the MADD lifeline at 313-357-1992 from 9 p.m. New Year's Eve until 5 a.m. the following morning. MADD volunteers will staff the lifeline to arrange transportation with one of the 33 cab companies participating this year. Funding for the program is once again being provided by 104.3 FM WOMC and the tri-county Anheuser-Busch distributors. Project LifeRide will be headquartered at Reese Brothers Telemarketing Co., 24901 Northwestern Highway, Suite 302, Southfield, Mich.
New Year's Eve has become a very safe motoring holiday in metro Detroit in these past years. We can continue to keep it a safe evening. We wish to encourage New Year's Eve celebrants to plan ahead regarding their transportation home. Not drinking before driving, hosting an alcohol-free party, choosing a designated driver, remaining at a friend's home after partying, purchasing a party/room package at one of the participating hotels, or celebrating at Birmingham's First Night events are all ways to safely ring in the New Year. If, as a last resort, one is impaired and still needs transportation, call Project LifeRide. Please be prepared, though, for a wait at times, due to the volume of calls received.
Through Project LifeRide, we also wish to focus public awareness on the new drunk driving laws going into effect in two days. In addition, by providing this safe ride home as an example, we hope to encourage people to make a New Year's resolution that will last all year; that being to arrange for safe transportation in the event they or someone they know are too intoxicated to drive.
Our goal is to build on the success we have had the past eight years in preventing fatalities on New Year's Eve with Project LifeRide. We want families to begin 1992 safely. Our fervent hope is that the safety we believe can again be achieved this holiday evening will be extended to the rest of the year.
Please be responsible. Remember: "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk." Call us at Project LifeRide at 313-357-1992 this New Year's Eve if you have not arranged safe transportation ahead of time and you or your friends are impaired.
