MOTHER ARRESTED IN CHILD-ABUSE CASE.

A 17-month-old girl was taken into protective custody An arrangement whereby a person is safeguarded by law enforcement authorities in a location other than the person's home because his or her safety is seriously threatened.  and her mother arrested after taking the baby to a hospital emergency room, suffering from burns and a cocaine reaction, officials said Monday.

When hospital workers asked Oneal about her daughter's injuries, she left the emergency room and fled in her car but was apprehended a short time later.

Oneal is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges of cruelty to a child.

The child is recovering and is expected not to have any long-lasting effects. Once the child is released from the hospital, she will be sent to a foster home, officials said.
