MORNING BRIEFING.Byline: The Register-Guard FROM THE REGION OSU sweeps Utah State in softball CORVALLIS - Oregon State, ranked No. 16 in the nation, got shutout pitching from freshmen Brianne McGowan and Ta'Tyana McElroy while sweeping a nonconference college softball doubleheader, 9-0 and 7-0, Sunday. McGowan (6-2) struck out six while recording her third shutout this season for the Beavers (30-9). She didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and finished with a two-hitter. McElroy (10-1) had a three-hitter in the finale. NCC splits softball twin bill Kasey Sconce had a three-run home run and drove in six runs to lead Northwest Christian College to a 15-6 victory over Patten University on Sunday in a nonconference college softball doubleheader at James Park. Sconce finished 3-for-5 and added a two-run double and an RBI single. Jamie Escobar was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Titans. Patten, from Oakland, Calif., won the opener 9-1. Beavers blast Cal in Pac-10 baseball BERKELEY, Calif. - Chris Campos homered and had six RBIs Sunday as Oregon State captured a 14-3 Pac-10 Conference baseball victory over California. Freshmen Dallas Buck, Kevin Gunderson and Jake McCormick combined on a five-hitter as Oregon State (16-7, 2-1 Pac-10) beat the Bears (15-17, 3-3). |
