MORE THAN 300 MILLION VISA CARDS IN CONSUMERS' WALLETS

SAN FRANCISCO, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Visa International announced today that it had surpassed the 300 million mark for Visa cards issued worldwide. By the end of 1992, 304.3 million Visa cards were in consumers' wallets, an increase of 9.5 percent from 277.8 million cards issued at the end of 1991.
Representing more than $1 trillion in purchasing power, the 304 million Visa cards in circulation compose the largest single block of consumer spending power in the world's economy. If placed end to end, the cards would form a line 16,000 miles long.
"Surpassing 300 million cards is an achievement that has been feasible because of the dedication and contribution of all our member financial institutions," said Charles T. Russell, president and chief executive officer of Visa International. "This is a staggering accomplishment, especially when one considers that just 10 years ago, there were not even 100 million Visa cards in circulation worldwide."
Visa is the largest consumer payment system in the world with more than 10 million acceptance locations and the leading global ATM network.
