With 30,000 student absences from the start of school to the end of December, the district lost $840,000 to $900,000. ``It's to try and recapture lost learning time for the child and lost average daily attendance,'' Superintendent Regina Rossall said. ``That's close to a million dollars. If we can get any of that back, that's money we can operate programs with.'' The 11-school district began offering Saturday school for four weeks beginning on Feb. 25. Students come to school for four hours and get lunch. Some schools have been averaging attendance of about 100 students. Trustees said the program offers students a chance at perfect attendance or to catch up on schoolwork. They get credit for their schoolwork and the district gets credit for their attendance. ``It's an exciting concept. It's good for kids. It gives them an extra boost and they can pick up on some homework and missed assessments,'' school board President Gwen Farrell said. ``Plus it does recapture some of the funds we lose now that there are no excused absences as far as (funding based on) average daily attendance goes. They count only students in their seats. It doesn't matter if a child is sick.'' The district is offering Saturday school this year for four weeks on a trial basis to see how it works in advance of doing it weekly next school year. ``We are doing it for four weeks now to see what the bugs are to operate it full-time next year. Our thought is when a child is absent during the week, he or she can make up the work on Saturday. They can do it right in the week they were absent,'' Rossall said.
