MORE ROAD KILL; DODGERS TURN INTO SKID DURING FREEWAY SERIES : ANGELS 3, DODGERS 2.

Byline: Matt McHale Daily News Staff Writer

For the Dodgers, their midseason Freeway Series The term Freeway Series refers to a series of baseball games played between Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of the American League and the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League.  with the Angels was one huge SigAlert.

He previously played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1996-1998), Montreal Expos (1998-2000, 2002), Cincinnati Reds (2001-2002), Kansas City  struck out against Troy Percival Troy Eugene Percival (born August 9, 1969 in Fontana, California) is a Major League Baseball reliever on the St. Louis Cardinals. Sparks, signed by the Angels on Feb. 23, lost all eight minor-league decisions this year before he was called up in mid-June, almost one year after undergoing ``Tommy John'' reconstructive elbow surgery.

It wasn't your typical inning for Percival, who allowed a leadoff double to Raul Mondesi.

Adrian Belre appeared to pop out to end the game, but right fielder Garret Anderson collided with second baseman Paco Martin for an error, allowing Mondesi to score.

Percival then walked pinch hitter Jim Eisenreich and second baseman Eric Young to load the bases. Guerrero fell behind 0-2 before fouling off three pitches, then chased a high fastball for strike three.

Five hits by the Dodgers was not a particularly strong debut by new hitting instructor Mickey Hatcher, who replaced Reggie Smith. Hatcher reclaimed his No. 9, the same number worn by Smith, who turned down a chance to manage at Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.

The Dodgers scored their run in the first inning after Young opened with a single and stole second. It was his 31st of the season, one short of major league leader Rickey Henderson, who stole two bases Thursday against the San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. Juan Castro moved Young to third with an infield out and Gary Sheffield brought him home with a grounder to short.

Reyes limited the Angels to just one hit through the first five innings, a Gary DiSarcina single with one out in the third.

Reyes also walked Phil Nevin with one out in the second, but the Dodgers turned a double play to get out of the inning.

But suddenly in the sixth, Reyes fell apart. After striking out DiSarcina to open the inning, he walked Sparks. Darin Erstad followed with a double down the right-field line.

Reyes struck out Dave Hollins to set a career high with seven, but then walked Jim Edmonds to load the bases. Hough, who pitched 10 years in the Dodgers organization, came to the mound but left Reyes in the game.

Fielder, who had three hits including a homer Wednesday night, was next and he walked to force in a run and tie the score 1-1.

That was enough for new manager Glenn Hoffman, who had Reyes at Triple-A Albuquerque. There, Reyes made six starts (1-4, 1.44) after failing to make the big club out of spring training.

The Dodgers, under fired manager Bill Russell and reassigned pitching coach Goose Gregson, complained that Reyes lacked focus on the mound.

He displayed that in the sixth, but the inning was just getting started.

Greg McMichael took over and immediately gave up a ground-rule double to left by Nevin that scored two runs and gave the Angels a 3-1 lead.

That was more than enough for Sparks, who pitched seven innings and did not allow a runner past second for the final six.

Sparks, who came to the majors with Milwaukee in 1995 after eight years in the organization, missed all of 1997 after undergoing surgery.

Although he allowed seven runs in 13 innings during his two major league starts, he won both against the Texas Rangers, whom the Angels overtook for the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. Like Thursday against the Dodgers, Sparks was shaky in the first inning of his last start. He allowed three runs, including a two-run homer by Juan Gonzalez.
