MORE OFF-ROAD PATROLS SOUGHT.

Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Palmdale sheriff's station officials want to expand their off-road motorcycle patrol into unincorporated areas In law, an unincorporated area is a region of land that is not a part of any municipality. To "incorporate" in this context means to form a municipal corporation, i.e., a city or town with its own government.  like Littlerock and Acton.

Six deputies and two sergeants on off-road motorcycles now patrol inside Palmdale city limits, mostly on weekends, handling up to 1,000 reports a year of off-highway vehicles racing up and down residential streets or in fields and hillsides behind homes.

use in city areas but we need to get out there at least 40 times a year to make this program a success and we need to be able to get into those unincorporated areas,'' said team member Dave Jennings David Tuthill Jennings (born June 8, 1952 in New York, New York) was an [ .

Palmdale sheriff's officials are applying for an $81,000 state grant to expand the off-road patrols. They don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Besides ticketing people riding off-road illegally, the unit also helps in searches for crime suspects or missing persons in areas patrol cars would have a hard time reaching.

The team rides ``dual-sport'' motorcycles that can be used on city streets or off-road.

Currently the team is funded entirely by the city, which allocated the money to purchase the motorcycles and equipment and to cover the deputies' training and pay.

The additional funding would be used to put patrols in problem areas including Acton, Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". It also refers to various locations:

and Littlerock, where wide-open spaces entice off-roaders. Riding on someone else's property without permission is illegal, and it also draws complaints from neighbors about noise and dust.

``A lot of people think that because the countryside is wide open, they can ride there but they can't,'' Jennings said. ``It's private property, but there are also noise and dust issues to deal with as well.''

Complaints from angry residents about illegal off-roading increased after the closure of the Littlerock Creek off-highway vehicle area in 2000 to protect the endangered en·dan·ger

The closest designated off-road area is in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  near Agua Dulce. Another is near Gorman.

Off-roaders can easily avoid deputies in patrol cars sent out to stop them.

``Those patrol cars usually can't get to those OHV areas and if they do, they're seen rather easily,'' Jennings said. ``The guys riding in those areas just take off in the other direction and out of sight. The OHV team can follow them.''

Community meetings are to be held in unincorporated areas to determine residents' support for off-road patrols as part of the grant process, Jennings said. No dates or locations have been set.
