an environmental report expected to be released Friday.

The draft environmental impact report for the proposed 20-year Van Nuys Airport Master Plan states the airport will produce less noise, because noisier jets will be phased out and replaced with newer, quieter aircraft.

Neighbors of the airport, however, had doubts about the report after getting a preview during a meeting of the Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council this week.

The report analyzes the effects of a 20-year plan to expand the amount of land designated for aviation at Van Nuys Airport from 161 to 232 acres, allowing a 20 percent increase in jets based there.

Airport officials have estimated that under their plan, the number of jets based at the airport likely would increase from 107 to 147 in the next 20 years, and the number of helicopters will increase from 44 to 55.

However, the environmental document states that under that plan, Van Nuys Airport could hold as many as 165 jets and nearly 70 helicopters.

The number of piston aircraft is expected to decrease, the report states.

The area affected by noise will decrease by a square mile, and air quality levels would not be compromised by the addition of aircraft to the airport, according to the report.

Eleven alternatives to the master plan proposed by the Airports Department also were evaluated in the report.

Copies of a summary report will be available at the Van Nuys Airport Administration Office, 16461 Sherman Way, Suite 300, or the Los Angeles Department of Airports headquarters.
