MOORPARK TO TRY AGAIN ON SENIOR CENTER; OFFICIALS WANT TO ATTRACT MORE BIDS FOR RENOVATION.

Byline: Paul Paul, 1901–64, king of the Hellenes (1947–64), brother and successor of George II. He married (1938) Princess Frederika of Brunswick. During Paul's reign Greece followed a pro-Western policy, and the Cyprus question was temporarily resolved.  O'Donoghue Staff Writer

The long-awaited Senior Center renovation likely will be delayed at least a month while the city rebids the project, which has attracted only one proposal with a price tag nearly 50 percent higher than estimates.

Although four contractors expressed interest in the job, only Atwater-based Robert W. Stanhope stan·hope

``Getting one bid on a project of this size is unusually low. You would normally end up with four or five,'' said City Councilman John Wozniak

Expansion and renovation of the Senior Center has been discussed as far back as 1996 because of the burgeoning number of seniors using the center.

The city had hoped to begin the renovation and expansion work at the beginning of October and finish it by the end of January. The project includes adding a 1,602-square-foot room, enclosure enclosure (inclosure) n. land bounded by a fence, wall, hedge, ditch or other physical evidence of boundary. Unfortunately, too often these creations are not included among the actual legally-described boundaries and cause legal problems.

``If there was more than one bid and they were consistently high, then we would know the bid price was not good,'' said Mary Lindley. ``So that's why we want to rebid re·bid

The City Council is expected to vote tonight on whether to solicit new bids on the project.

Jan McCarthy, the Stanhope executive overseeing the company's bid for the Senior Center, said she was disappointed by the council item to consider seeking additional bids, but that the firm would try again to work on the project.

``I bid it in response to the specifications and the conditions there,'' said McCarthy.

``I'm disappointed because I put a lot of time in it, but I suppose those are the rules,'' she said. ``We will participate if they rebid it. We certainly have a lot of time and resources in it, so we'd like to rebid.''

Lindley said she isn't currently recommending scaling back or changing the scope of the project that also includes improvements for handicapped access and seismic retrofitting work.

If the council agrees to seek new bids, the bids for the project could be solicited as early as Thursday, Lindley said.

Most of the money for the project will come from state and federal grants, according to according to
