Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer

A leading manufacturer of air bag parts is expected to be given the green light this week to begin clearing land for a multimillion-dollar facility that could bring up to 500 jobs to Moorpark.

City officials plan to issue a grading permit to Special Devices Inc. for nearly 300 acres just east of the Moorpark Freeway at New Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Avenue, said Nelson Miller, Moorpark's director of community development.

``Moorpark has been quite committed to bringing them here,'' Miller said. ``Now, it's just a matter of time.''

SDI is expected to begin grading the land within the next two weeks, and the work will take 90 days to six months to complete, city officials said. Construction of the company's new headquarters is expected to start this spring.

SDI, which employs 450 people at its Placerita Canyon site, expects to add 500 jobs when its new plant opens in 1998, Miller said.

With a multimillion-dollar payroll supporting hundreds of employees, SDI is expected to generate a significant revenue increase to local businesses. Employees will use Moorpark's gas stations, restaurants and other local services. The company also is expected to utilize Moorpark's support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services , such as electricians, janitorial services and supplies, city officials said.

Moorpark Mayor Pat Hunter said he looks forward to having SDI as a part of the community.

``I think they're going to be a very good member of Moorpark,'' Hunter said. ``They will provide many jobs and assist us in the economic development of the city. We're looking forward to having them.''

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , said Ed Ball, SDI project manager. Moorpark also has enough land to accommodate the company's needs and is close to where key employees live.

SDI had considered relocating to Mesa, Ariz., but through the efforts of California's Red Team for economic retention - made up of the state's Trade and Commerce Agency, the Department of Transportation and several county and local agencies - SDI was persuaded to stay in California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). .

The company manufactures air bag initiators - pyrotechnic devices that set off the bags. Similar devices are manufactured for the aerospace industry for use in missiles and military crew escape systems.

SDI, which employs about 450 people in Placerita Canyon and 550 more in Mesa, shipped 13.5 million air bag initiators in 1995, and sold about 17.5 million this year, officials said.
