The Department of Fish and Game estimates nearly 40,000 people dangled lines in Eastern Sierra waters during Saturday's trout season opener, and some 80 percent were from Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .
Suffice to say, Paul Moncourtois of Moorpark beat some serious odds when he boated what appeared to be the largest fish caught by local anglers.
The brilliant rainbow he hooked on a Thomas Buoyant lure at Convict Lake Convict Lake (elevation 7,850 feet (2393 m)), is a lake in the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada in California, USA. It is known for its fishing and the dramatic mountains (including Mount Morrison) that surround the lake. tilted the scales at 6.68 pounds. While trout up to 7 pounds, 15 ounces were weighed in at other marinas, their captors were not identified or from out of the area.
``I let out my hoots hoots
Variant of hoot2. and hollers. And the people in the boat next to us had to ask what was going on,'' said Moncourtois, a production manager for a Camarillo golf clothing company. ``I knew it was a big fish, but I was a little surprised it was the biggest fish caught at Convict.''
He had read accounts that larger brood rainbows, up to 10 pounds, had been planted in February. But none of those fish were seen back at the docks. And during a 1979 opening-day trip to Convict, Moncourtois had caught 7- and 8-pounders, so he reckoned grander specimens would be on tap.
``Still, I was relieved when it was in the net,'' said Moncourtois, whose stringer included 2-1/2- and 3-1/2-pound rainbows taken by his brother Scott of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. . ``You get bragging rights in the boat.''
