Glendale, paced by individual winner Julio Serratos, placed four runners among the top seven to defeat defending state champion Moorpark 31-40 and win its eighth conference title in 11 years.

The Glendale women, buoyed by the 3-4 finish of Cheryl Ramos and Kelly Doyle, held off Ventura 58-63 to win their first title since 1994.

Freshman Juan Fernandez (22:57), Glendale's eighth runner, moved up to the No. 5 position Thursday to round out the Glendale scoring.

``I knew our first guys were going to hang on,'' Glendale coach Eddie Lopez said. ``I was nervous with Juan and how many guys were going to pass him. This is probably the best team race we've won all year.''

Lopez issued a challenge to his runners to shave shave (shav)

``The guys were wrestling with me and they almost amputated my finger with the cord,'' Serratos said, laughing.

On Thursday, no one came close to Serratos. The sophomore pulled away from his closest challenger, Miguel Galindo of Ventura, shortly before the two-mile mark. Serrantos made his move on the longest and steepest incline on the course, on narrow dirt paths, to record his seventh victory in eight races.
