MOORPARK FACES NO. 1 IN NORTH : UNDERDOGS COULD NIP MERCED.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

The Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team hopes to continue its surprising postseason run when it will meet Merced College today in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs in Cupertino.

But it won't be easy.

With a 30-5 record, Merced is the top-ranked team from Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at the San Jose State Event Center.

Moorpark took third place in the Western State Conference this year behind Ventura and Cuesta.

Musketeers coach Sherry Ruter isn't worried about her team's underdog status. After all, Moorpark frequently has overcome adversity this year.

``I think if we play our game and execute, we'll do OK,'' said Ruter, a second-year coach.

The Musketeers put together a successful record despite some injuries to key players early in the season. And now that all are healthy, they're playing their best basketball of the year.

The trouble started in the fourth game, when starting center and leading scorer Theresa Rough suffered an ankle injury. She then missed five games.

With Rough out of the lineup, guard Trisha Palmquist assumed much of the scoring load - until she went down with a broken leg and missed nine games.

It took Palmquist about three games to get back into the flow. Coupled with the return of Rough, the Musketeers were beginning to peak just in time for the playoffs.

Of course, some other players have stepped up as well.

``We just have a bunch of players that have always been close and want to win,'' Ruter said. ``They're a great group of players on and off the court.''
