They are the first team from the Ventura County school to make an appearance at the national finals.

Ellis said they were surprised at their showing because they have fewer team members than allowed. ``We only have eight people, and they (Taylor) have nine. We thought we would come in fourth or fifth with one less person. This is awesome,'' he said.

``We have to focus on the next question,'' Moorpark team captain Nick Lange explained later.

When they arrived at Grace Church, refreshed after taking the last five tests of the competition, the Moorpark students were greeted by hundreds of supporters from their small Ventura County community.

Parents, teachers from Moorpark schools and fellow students were on hand to lend support and create a really large cheering section.

``I think they want to win this,'' said Tobey Shaw, Ari's mother, as the competition got under way. ``But they also know it's going to be hard. This is the best of the best that they're up against.''

``You're smiling,'' she said.

Alexandra, never dropping the smile, said, ``that's because I know I have to take another one after this.''

The tests were not without controversy.
