MOORPARK COLLEGE NOTES: MOORPARK HAS EARLY LEAD FOR WSC SUPREMACY TITLE.

Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. , which finished first in the running for last year's Western State Conference athletic supremacy title, has the early lead for the 1997-98 award. Bakersfield, which finished fourth last year, is second.

Points are awarded (10 for first, nine for second, down to 1 for 10th) based on how men's and women's teams finished. Included in the early standings are football, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, wrestling, water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  and men's and women's soccer.

Last year Moorpark finished with 93 points, Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The steep side exposes the edge of erosion-resistant rock layers that form the cuestas.  was second with 91.

Thus far, the Raiders have 45 points, Bakersfield has 41. The big point scorer for Moorpark was the wrestling team, which captured the state title. The team captured its eighth conference title and seventh in the past nine seasons and was led by 167-pound state champion and state wrestler of the year Ati Conner and state coach of the year Paul Keysaw. The team has a conference mark of 56-8-1 in 12 years of WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

Men's cross country captured its second consecutive state title to add substantial points. The women's cross country team was 18th in state.

Women's volleyball placed second in the Northern Division and made it to the regional playoffs.

The football team finished third in the Northern Division and qualified for the Western State Bowl against Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . The game was canceled because of bad weather. Also contributing was women's soccer, which missed the playoffs by one game, finishing fourth place in the conference.

The winter sports winter sports: see bobsledding; curling; hockey, ice; ice dancing; ice skating; skiing; snowshoes; tobogganing.  will likely tighten up the race, but the Raiders will field solid teams in all sports in the spring, which could give Moorpark another title.

Spring in air: Spring sports are anywhere from two weeks to a month from starting play.

The baseball team, under coach Ken Wagner, begins the earliest, playing in the Orange Coast tournament in Costa Mesa beginning Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

The conference schedule begins Feb. 26 at Allan Hancock College Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County. Approximately 13,000 credit and more than 5,500 noncredit and community services students enroll each semester.  in Santa Maria.

Softball, under the direction of coach De Dow, starts with a home game Feb. 6 against Orange Coast College Orange Coast College (OCC), founded in 1948, is a community college providing two-year associate of arts degrees, and lower-division classes transferable to other colleges and universities. . Conference play begins March 10 against Pierce College at Moorpark.

Track and Field, coached by Doni Green, starts the season hosting a tri-meet with Valley, Glendale and Allan Hancock on Feb. 12.

Women's tennis is scheduled to begin Feb. 17 against Santa Barbara. The team is coached by Pauletta Matsui.
