MOORPARK COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: SOCCER TEAMS FEELING PAIN EARLY IN SEASON : INJURIES SLOW DOWN MEN, WOMEN.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

The losses are mounting quickly. Players that is, not games.

The Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  soccer teams usually have been satisfied with the outcome of their games since the season started last week, but Raiders players are dropping fast.

``When they return, they'll make a valuable addition to an already strong team,'' coach Sean Roche said.

``I'm frustrated by some of the injuries, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how we're coming together. They're having fun out there.''

The Moorpark men earned their first win of the year with a 6-1 victory over Cypress on Tuesday. Mustafa Sarwari and Andres Cruz both scored two goals.

The Raiders suffered a 2-1 loss in the season opener last Friday when San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  Mesa broke a 1-1 tie in the final two minutes.

The game wasn't a complete loss, though.

``It was good for us,'' Roche said. ``It pushed us to our limit and showed us our weaknesses.''

The women's team opened the season with a second-place finish Noun 1. second-place finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)

The final against Cypress wasn't as kind to the Raiders. Moorpark played most of the game down one or two players as the Raiders succumbed to nagging injuries, fatigue and injuries inflicted by a bigger Cypress team. Moorpark lost 4-0.

Among those injured were Brenda Escobar, who went down with a pulled quadricep, Jill Clarkson, who suffered bruised shins, and goalkeeper Julie Jinsen (pulled hamstring). None of the injuries are expected to be long lasting.

The Raiders begin conference play today at Bakersfield.

Unwanted break: The rest of the Western State Conference begins the football season Saturday while Moorpark has a bye. It's not a situation the Raiders are pleased with.

``That's a real disadvantage,'' head coach Jim Bittner said. ``Everyone else has a game under their belt by the time we start. You learn a lot in games. It's a real disadvantage, but we've had a first-week bye the last few years so it's something we've dealt with before. Next year our bye will hopefully be somewhere else on the schedule.''
