MOORPARK COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: INJURIES TAKING RAIDERS TO MAT : DEFENDING STATE-CHAMPION WRESTLING TEAM TRYING TO REMAIN POSITIVE.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Hopes of another state title for the Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  wrestling team are dropping quicker than Raiders opponents used to fall to the mat.

``We've been decimated by injuries,'' Raiders coach Paul Keysaw said.

Four wrestlers are out for the season and another is out for about a month.

``I've been around wrestling for 20 years and I've never seen anything like this,'' Keysaw said. ``I've been around teams that have had two, maybe three guys go down, but to have this happen so early in the season and with so many guys, it's just a fluke fluke, parasitic flatworm of the trematoda class, related to the tapeworm. Instead of the cilia, external sense organs, and epidermis of the free-living flatworms, adult flukes have sucking disks with which they cling to their hosts and an external cuticle that  thing. I guess the wrestling gods were mad at us. Maybe we were too successful.''

Last season's state title was the Raiders third in the '90s. They are aiming for their 20th Western State Conference title.

Among those injured are sophomore All-Americans Juan Roman and Scott Erickson
Scott Gavin Erickson (born February 2, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher.

Erickson began his professional career in 1989 when he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 4th round of the amateur draft.
. Roman (133 pounds) placed third in the state last season, but is out for the season with a knee injury. Erickson, a state runner up at the 157 level last year, was the latest Raider to go down when he suffered a separated shoulder This article or section is in need of attention from an expert on the subject.

last week. He's expected to be out four to five weeks.

Moorpark's top two newcomers, Dustin Clocherty and Saul Lucerto, are also sidelined for the season. Clocherty (141) is out with viral meningitis while Lucerto (149) has a broken hand. Both were among the state's top high school wrestlers in their respective weight classes last season.

``It has affected the team moral,'' Keysaw said. ``It's hard to watch your top guys go down. We've tried to stay as positive as we can.

``It's really forced the younger guys to step up to the plate.''

Armando Torres has done well filling in at the 133 slot. He placed second at last weekend's West Valley Tournament after he was forced to default with an ankle injury. Freshman Ramon Rodriguez Ramon "Mone" Rodriquez, was born and raised in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. He is perhaps best known for his recurring roles on two television series The Wire & Day Break.  provides promise at the 149 level despite an unimpressive record.

``He's been battling,'' Keysaw said. ``He's been losing close matches, so that's a good sign.''

The Raiders won their first conference match, 41-9, at Cypress last week.

``They did some really nice things against Bakersfield,'' said coach Steve Burkhart, referring to last Friday's three-game win over the Renegades. ``They played really well. They just couldn't do it a couple nights in a row. We're gonna have to learn to sustain it.''

The Raiders are close to full strength again as their numerous injuries have begun to heal. Casey Ragland sprained her ankle against Bakersfield but was back for Tuesday's game. Laura Flanagan was expected to start practicing by the end of this week after a missing the past few weeks with a nerve problem in her foot.

Men's soccer: Moorpark rebounded from its first conference loss with a 4-0 win Tuesday against Hancock. The Raiders suffered a 2-0 loss to first-place Glendale last Friday when they gave up a goal in each half and failed to take advantage of their own early scoring opportunities.

Moorpark plays for second place today when it travels to Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , which is currently tied with the Raiders at 3-1 in conference.

``They're the team to beat for most teams,'' Moorpark coach Sean Roche said of Santa Barbara.``I think we have the ability to beat them, it's whether we make up our minds to do so.''
