MOORPARK COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: EYE ON OFFENSE HOPES REMAIN HIGH FOR MOORPARK SCORERS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

MOORPARK - For the Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  men's basketball team, an abundance of scoring is making up for a lot. The Raiders rank last in the Western State Conference in team defense and have yet to post a record better than .500. However, a surging offense prevents Moorpark from being a heavy underdog when it faces first-place Ventura on Wednesday.

The Raiders not only have the conference's second-leading scorer in sophomore Earnest Williams, they rank first in scoring as a team with an an average of 90.5 points a game.

Wednesday's 89-76 victory over Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The steep side exposes the edge of erosion-resistant rock layers that form the cuestas.  was a perfect example of Moorpark's wide-spread scoring ability. Six Raiders scored in double figures, including sophomore Johnny Gray For the baseball player, see .

Johnny Gray (born June 19, 1960) was an American 800m runner of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1985 he set the US record of 1:42.60 min at a meet in Koblenz.
, who had a team-high 18 points, and sophomore Todd Tomlinson, who scored 14 points off the bench.

Moorpark hit 11 3-pointers in the game.

The victory was the third in a row for the Raiders, who improved to 8-9 overall but 3-1 in WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team opened WSC play 3-0 before being upset 69-57 by Cuesta on Wednesday.

The setback to a Cuesta team that improved to just 6-12 overall was a sharp contrast to recent Raiders performances. Moorpark had improved to 13-6 entering last week with a revitalized offense that had four of the division's top seven scorers during WSC play.

Lea Sabado is a central part of the Raiders' success. She was named WSC Player of the Week for scoring 17 points with seven rebounds and three steals in a 63-50 victory over Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . The performance moved her up to third in the division in scoring with an average of 17 points a game during conference.

Teammates Lindsay Goldblatt (14 points a game), Courtney Pena (13.3) and Sara Ruiz (13.3) also are among the leading scorers during conference play. Such output is a significant improvement over Moorpark's nonconference play, which leaves only one Raider in the WSC's top 30 in overall scoring (Sabado ranks 29th at 10.6 points a game).

--Moving on: Goalkeeper Zach Brunner of the men's soccer team secured an opportunity to continue his career beyond Moorpark. Brunner committed to Brewton-Parker University, an NAIA NAIA

 program in Georgia.

Brunner, a Lancaster High graduate, earned All-WSC and All-Region honors this past season as a sophomore for the Raiders. He received interest from a few small schools in California but was enticed by a full scholarship and the opportunity to play for a coach (Ben Moore) who attended Moorpark College.

--A family affair: Brothers Fred and Robbie Rico are reunited as teammates this season on the Raiders baseball team. Fred, who did not play last year after playing in 2002, will be a much-needed veteran in a young outfield. Robbie, a versatile freshman, joins the team after an All-Golden League career at Highland of Palmdale.

The Ricos aren't the only set of brothers in the program. Sophomore infielder Casey Gordon is in his second season with older brother Zach as an assistant coach.

The Raiders season opens Feb. 5 at the WSC tournament.
