8-1 in the first round of the Southern Section Div. II playoffs Friday. Ben Grover pitched a two hitter for the Warriors.

The Musketeers took a 1-0 lead in the second when Troy Loehr hit an opposite-field home run to right.

``That was big time for him to go the other way,'' Moorpark coach Scott Fullerton said.

With Moorpark pitcher Jason Breckley effective early in the game - he faced the minimum number of batters through the fourth inning - it appeared Loehr's home run might hold up. But Fullerton said he knew more offense would be needed.

``When it's only one run in the playoffs - you know you need more than that,'' he said.

That became the case in the fifth. Breckley walked leadoff hitter In baseball, a leadoff hitter is a batter who bats first in the lineup. Strategy
Leadoff hitters must possess certain traits to be successful: they must reach base at a proficient rate and be able to steal bases.
Wilson Blaine on four pitches. Blaine later scored to tie the game on Sean Steven's two-out single. The Warriors would have scored more in their next at-bat, but Musketeers shortstop Justin Bogoyevac kept a ground ball in the infield with a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  stop.

``He's a big reason why we've done well,'' Fullerton said. ``He's not flashy, but he gets the job done. And the routine plays are routine.''

bases-loaded jam by getting Jimmy Dodos to pop out. The Warriors took advantage of Musketeers miscues to score three runs in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Jimmy Mittleberger reached first base on a passed ball after striking out. The next batter went to second on a throwing error. After an intentional walk to cleanup hitter In baseball, the cleanup hitter is the hitter who bats fourth in the lineup. Strategy
Cleanup hitters often have the most power on the team and are typically the team's best all-around hitter; their job is to "clean up the bases", hence the name.
Blaine, David Lohman hit a two-run double. Righetti added one more run when Blaine scored on a wild pitch. Breckley, a senior, took a reflective approach to his team's misfortune in the sixth.

``That's just the way it happens,'' he said. ``You can't really blame anybody. We're all a team.''

Kevin Hernandez relieved Breckley in the seventh and gave up a two-run home run to Jimmy Mittleberger. The Warriors batted around in the inning and had four extra-base hits in scoring four runs.

The run support was more than enough for Grover, who let only one batter besides Loehr reach scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on . However, he could not retire Moorpark leadoff hitter Ryne Intelkofer. The second baseman second baseman

Against the rest of the batters, Grover had excellent command. He threw his fastball to get ahead of hitters and had a sharp curveball.

``He changed speeds very effectively,'' Fullerton said. ``You've got to tip your cap to that guy.''

The loss ended the season for Moorpark (18-10), but it will not end the time the players spend with each other. They soon will play in the Valley Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al
