MONTCLAIR PREP REMOVES LONGTIME BASKETBALL COACH ABRAMS.

Howard Abrams, the region's winningest high school basketball coach, has been removed as coach of the Montclair Prep boys' team.

Abrams, who has coached the Mounties since 1976 and led the school to three Southern Section titles and a state championship, has been involuntarily reassigned to the newly created position of assistant athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic .

``I can't tell you the whole story right now,'' Abrams said. ``I've been real happy as coach the last 22 years. Something might break by the end of the year, but right now how it stands, I'm not even coaching.''

He has been replaced by Bob Webb, the coach of the girls' team.

``I honestly think people in the administration didn't think Howard would mind (stepping down),'' a school source said. ``But Howard Abrams feels backstabbed and betrayed. They trampled over him.''

Abrams and Goldstein have co-coached in the Maccabi Games the last eight years, winning three gold medals, one silver and two bronze.

Despite a student population of about 200 students, Montclair Prep has produced some of the region's best players, including Brad Adams, Keith London, Tom McKay, Todd Bowser Bowser may mean:
