Apparently, my column last week on redpolls nesting in a flower pot at my house caused quite a stir. I received an e-mail from the Audubon Society in which I was told redpolls don't nest in this state.

OK.

On the other hand, I was told that these creatures were redpolls by an experienced birdwatcher who insists that he is right.

That's what I thought. Surely with photographic evidence we could tell just what these things are.

I've been trying and let me tell you, it would be easier to grab a candid of "Nessie" the Loch Ness monster (and that does include the flight to Scotland.)

I will continue to try, people. That's all I can say.

Oh, and last week I informed my readers the birds had three eggs in the nest. Wrong!

By last count, there are six eggs in the nest, and it's not a very big nest. (After all, it's only an 8-inch pot.)

I think they'll have to look into moving into something a little larger once the brood is hatched - perhaps the 12-inch pot I have hanging near the vegetable garden? It is a sunnier spot ...

Dave W. Rodgers has joined Workers' Credit Union as senior vice president, community and governmental affairs and commercial business development.

In the newly created position, Mr. Rodgers will oversee community and government relations and will work closely with the new business development team. "Dave will be an incredible asset to Workers'. He is well-known and respected not only as a banker but as a community leader," commented Frederick D. Healey, president and CEO of Workers' Credit Union.

The Lunenburg resident has extensive banking experience, serving for the past 11 years as a senior vice president of Fitchburg Savings Bank, managing community relations, facilities and business development activities. In addition, Mr. Rodgers worked six years as vice president of asset evaluation for the former Safety Fund Bank in Fitchburg.

Mr. Rodgers is the chairman of the Lunenburg Water District and served on the board of selectman and on the planning and health boards in Lunenburg. He has also been active in numerous other organizations, including United Way of North Central Massachusetts, North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce and the former Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital in Ayer.

Mr. Rodgers graduated from Nichols College in Dudley. He and his wife, Karen, have two adult children and a grandson.

The 16th annual Central Massachusetts Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 4, at Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston. The tournament has raised almost $300,000 for the fight against cancer, and this year organizers hope to raise another $25,000.

Fees for the event are $175 and this includes lunch, golf and cart, dinner and a raffle. The day also includes hole-in-one, closest to the pin contests and a silent auction. Raffle items include golf clubs, a golf bag, putters and gift certificates to area restaurants. Auction items include Red Sox tickets, golf clubs, and two pairs of tickets on American Airlines.

The Clinton Hospital Community Benefits Department will sponsor a free diabetes and cholesterol screening from 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Clinton Hospital Laboratory Drawing Station, 201 Highland St., Clinton.

The screening will check blood sugar levels, total cholesterol as well as high-density lipoprotein levels.

To ensure accurate results, individuals must not eat any food for eight hours before the exam. They may, however, drink water.

This free screening is open to the public, especially anyone who is uninsured or underinsured. For individuals who need additional health care services and do not have a personal physician, referrals to free area health clinics will be provided.

Refreshments will be served. This screening is being supported by a contribution from Eli Lilly Corp.

In addition, the Clinton Hospital Community Benefits Department is offering a series of free beginner yoga classes starting Tuesday, June 5, and continuing to Tuesday, June 26, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the hospital's Conference Rooms A and B.

The four-session program will teach basic yoga postures, alignment, breathing and stretching as well as meditation and relaxation techniques. The instructor for the two series of classes will be Denise Welch of Awakenings in Sterling.
