MONGREL HORDES.

Byline: - Daily News

Best dressed, fastest eater and best pit bull mix are not your typical dog show categories. But the second annual ``Nuts for Mutts'' Dog Show and Pet Fair on May 3 will be far from typical.

Although purebreds and their owners are welcome to attend, the festivities are meant to celebrate good old-fashioned mutts.

Actress Kim Basinger will be the day's host. Celebrity judges - including Samantha Mathis, Carla Gugino, Jonathan Lipnicki and Debra Wilson - are scheduled to appear and vote on the best mutt in the land. In addition to the dog show, there will be a pet fair featuring pet product vendors, local restaurant stands and activities for kids.

All proceeds from the event benefit New Leash on Life Animal Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and finding homes for stray dogs. You can even adopt a four-legged friend to enter the competition next year.

NUTS FOR MUTTS, Pierce College, Shepard Stadium, 6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills. Fair opens at 9 a.m. May 3; dog show begins at 11 a.m. Admission: $10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 children. Information: (661) 255-0097 or www.nutsformutts.com.
