MONDAY FORUM TO PROBE EFFECTS OF CHROMIUM 6.

A panel of scientists will discuss progress being made to address the health effects of chromium 6 in drinking water at a forum scheduled for Monday at City Hall.

The forum will start at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 613 E. Broadway.

The speakers will include University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  professor John M. Peters, director of the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center; Kenneth Olden, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is one of 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH),which is a component of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Director of the NIEHS is Dr. David A. Schwartz. ; and John Bucher, deputy director of the National Toxicology Program National Toxicology Program Environment A program that conducts toxicologic tests on substances frequently found at the EPA's National Priorities List sites, which have the greatest potential for human exposure .

Glendale's groundwater is contaminated with chromium 6, a chemical used in chrome plating and aerospace manufacturing. Chromium 6 is carcinogenic when inhaled, but its effects as a result of ingestion are unclear.

Bucher will discuss the time line of a federal study focusing on the health impact of ingesting chromium 6. The federal study is expected to resolve whether chromium 6 is safe in drinking water and, if so, at what levels.

The panel will also feature Professor John R. Froines, director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. ; UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

They will discuss the carcinogenic and toxic effects of chromium 6 at molecular and genetic levels.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Pasadena, who organized the event.
