MOM PICKS UP HONORS FOR AILING VANDROSS.

Soul singer Luther Vandross emerged as the big winner at Sunday's ``American Music Awards,'' but he was sick so he sent his mother to accept his trophies.

Vandross, recovering from a stroke that hospitalized him at the beginning of the summer, was named favorite male artist in the soul/R&B category. His recent album, ``Dance With My Father,'' was voted favorite album in the same genre.

Presenter Michael Chiklis Michael Charles Chiklis (born August 30, 1963) is an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning American actor. He is known for starring in two popular police dramas: The Commish (1991–1995) and The Shield (2002–) and as Ben Grimm/The Thing in the live-action , star of the FX series ``The Shield,'' took Vandross' trophy to Mary Vandross, who was sitting in the audience.
