MOM LOVED CAMPING, HIKING ESTELLA MOTHERSPAW ALSO ENJOYED BOARD GAMES, FOOTBALL.

An avid nature lover who enjoyed camping and hiking, Van Nuys homemaker Estella ``Pat'' Motherspaw also was devoted to her family.

Motherspaw, who had multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years, died of pneumonia Dec. 17 in Granada Hills. She was 83.

``She loved the outdoors and her favorite was the mountains. She liked the fresh air, waterfalls and looking at nature. She loved camping,'' said her son, William Motherspaw.

He recalled numerous family trips, noting favorite vacation spots included Sequoia and Yosemite national parks Yosemite National Park (yōsĕm`ĭtē), 761,266 acres (308,205 hectares), E central Calif.; est. 1890 as a result of the efforts of conservationist John Muir. Located in the Sierra Nevada, it is a glacier-scoured area of great beauty; Mt. .

``She was a very sweet and loving woman,'' he said. ``Everything in her life revolved around the family unit.''

Estella Edith Risen was born in Zanesville, Ohio Zanesville is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,586 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum CountyGR6. , to Alice Stanley Risen and Lewis Risen on July 23, 1922. After graduating from high school, she worked for a telephone company.

She met her husband, John Motherspaw, on a double date and a year later, on Sept. 6, 1947, they were married. They moved to Burbank for several years and lived in Van Nuys from 1953 to 2004. John Motherspaw died in 2004.

Estella Motherspaw also was known for her home cooking, making her family's meals from scratch using fresh ingredients.

William Motherspaw recalled that his mother enlisted him to help shell peas and made her own cranberry sauce, pies and pasta. She also made homemade ice cream.

``She was very generous and not self-centered at all. She never complained (about her illness),'' said daughter Janet Dancer. ``Her guidance as a parent was excellent. She taught us right from wrong. She was always there for us.''

Motherspaw is survived by her children, William and Phillip Motherspaw and Janet Dancer; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Lorena Bishop. Another son, Doug Motherspaw, died in 1953.

 and burial were held Thursday at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth.
