MOLL TO RETIRE AS FLEMING PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
OKLAHOMA CITY, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleming Companies Inc. (NYSE: FLM) announced today that John E. Moll plans to retire from his position as president and chief operating officer late this year.
Moll will continue as president until Nov. 1. At that time, E. Dean Werries, chairman and chief executive officer, will assume the additional post of president.
"Since becoming chief operating officer two and a half years ago, John Moll has made an important contribution to the growth and progress of the company," said Werries.
"In spite of intense competition and rapidly changing conditions, the company's long-term objectives established by management in 1989 have, for the most part, been met or exceeded," Werries stated. "John has played a key role in this accomplishment, and we will always be grateful."
Moll has spent 35 years in the food distribution business. He was president of Malone & Hyde when Fleming acquired that company in 1988. He was named president and chief operating officer of Fleming in November 1989.
"At the time of the Malone & Hyde acquisition, I made a commitment to stay on for at least three years. I have done that and more," said Moll. "Now after a long and enjoyable career, I have decided to retire and devote more time to my family and personal activities.
"It has been particularly rewarding for me to have served in a leadership role with Fleming," Moll said. "I feel that a lot of progress has been made and that the company has considerable momentum. I also feel very confident about the strength of the continuing management team."
During the coming months, Moll will be working to facilitate a smooth transfer of his responsibilities and will be involved in a number of important activities for the company.
Moll began his career with Malone & Hyde, a large food wholesaler based in Memphis, Tenn., in 1958. After serving as division manager in two locations, he became regional manager with responsibility for five divisions. He then served as vice president of wholesale food distribution, executive vice president and finally president of Malone & Hyde. When Malone & Hyde joined Fleming in 1988, he was named president of the Mid-South region and then became president and chief operating officer of Fleming the following year.
Stauth Named Executive Vice President - Division Operations
It was also announced that Robert E. Stauth has been named to the new position of executive vice president - division operations. He will move to the Oklahoma City corporate office and have overall responsibility for the Mid-America, Southern, Mid-South and Western regions.
Stauth was previously senior vice president - Western region. Before that, he was vice president - Arizona operations with responsibility for the large Phoenix division. He has also served as president of the Houston division. Stauth has been associated with Fleming for a total of 19 years and has an outstanding record of accomplishment.
"Bob Stauth complements a very strong and experienced senior management team that is dedicated to the retailers Fleming is privileged to serve," Werries said. "We're clearly focused on developing a distribution system that ensures those retailers' success."
In a separate release today, the company announced earnings for the second quarter.
Fleming is a nationwide wholesale food distribution company serving more than 4,800 stores in 36 states.
