Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

In a matchup of staff aces, the JetHawks' Rob Luce was good and had a lot of help from his teammates, while Modesto's Scott Rivette was shaky and was showered with bad luck.

Luce tossed seven solid innings and the JetHawks scored three early runs off Modesto mistakes to win 7-2 before 1,242 sunbaked sun·baked

The JetHawks took advantage of two A's errors to score three unearned runs in the second and take a 4-0 lead after James Clifford hit a solo home run.

``Those were the kinds of mistakes we were making early in the season,'' said JetHawks manager Rick Burleson

Joe Mathis followed by hitting a sinking line drive to left. Justin Bowles had to charge the ball and got there in plenty of time, but he had the ball bounce off the heel of his glove for the A's second straight error as Ramirez scored.

Rivette had his own problems, as well. The JetHawks managed just five hits off the right-hander, who also walked three and hit one. But the Long Beach State product got balls up in the strike zone with his first pitch of both the second and third innings.

``I needed the rest of the guys to come through for me today. I didn't have my best stuff,'' said Luce, who improved to 6-1 after tossing seven innings and allowing two earned runs. ``The (Modesto) guys made some loud outs.''
