MODEL, MOM AND WIFE, JOY STEPHENS DIES.Byline: Daily News LANCASTER - Joy and Dawson Stephens met at a church dance when he was 16 and she was 13. He went off to fight in World War II, came home, and they married. They were looking forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary this month. But Joy died just before the date. ``Thirteen days short of 60,'' Dawson said. ``Three days after Christmas she was gone.'' Joy, who suffered from congenital congenital /con·gen·i·tal/ (kon-jen´i-t'l) existing at, and usually before, birth; referring to conditions that are present at birth, regardless of their causation. con·gen·i·tal adj. 1. heart failure, died peacefully in her sleep Dec. 28 at their Lancaster home. She was buried six days later at Joshua Memorial Park in Lancaster. The couple met May 17, 1941, at a church dance in Salt Lake City. Dawson joined the Marine Corps and spent two years fighting on islands in the South and Central Pacific with the 3rd Marine Division. After the war ended, he returned to Salt Lake City on Dec. 21, 1945, proposed to Joy the next day, gave her a ring on Christmas and they married two weeks later on Jan. 10, 1946. Dawson also served during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.
