MOBILE-PENSACOLA IS NUMBER TEN FEEDER MARKET FOR U.S. CASINO INDUSTRY, SURVEY SHOWS
Mobile-Pensacola-area households made 3 million visits to casinos for gaming entertainment in 1995.
Nationwide findings in the Harrah's Survey include:
-- Americans made 154 million visits to casinos in 1995, up 23 percent over 1994.
-- For the first year, more than half of the nation's states (30) each generated more than one million household visits to casinos in 1995.
-- U.S. citizens show strong support for casino gaming as an "acceptable" entertainment activity. Sixty-one percent of U.S. adults in 1995 found casino entertainment to be "acceptable for anyone," while 30 percent found it acceptable for others but not themselves. The combined acceptance rating of 91 percent was consistent with survey results in 1994, despite a nationwide influx of anti-casino rhetoric in the past year. Only nine percent of Americans believe casinos are "not acceptable for anyone."
-- A majority of citizens even show strong support for casinos in their local community. Fifty-five percent said they would "favor the introduction of casino gaming in my local community because of its benefits to the local economy." Just three years ago, only 41 percent of Americans said they would favor casinos in their community.
-- When it comes to oversight of the casino industry, the Harrah's Survey revealed that 78 percent of Americans believe casinos should continue to be regulated by states and not the federal government.
