MOBIL UPGRADES BEAUMONT CHEMICAL FACILITY

FAIRFAX, Va., Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) announced it has upgraded its aromatics facility in Beaumont, Texas, to produce a higher grade of toluene for use in the petrochemicals industry.
The project is part of Mobil's long-term strategy to build on synergies between its oil and chemical operations and to capitalize on emerging growth markets.
The Mobil Chemical Company aromatics unit has a capacity of 230,000 tons (70 million gallons) a year of toluene. Prior to the upgrading, the toluene was of a commercial quality suitable for use as an octane enhancer for gasoline or for conversion to benzene. While the upgrading does not increase capacity, it does enable the facility to produce a nitration grade toluene that can be used as a feedstock to the chemical industry in the manufacture of such end products as plastics, detergents, epoxy paints and pharmaceuticals.
The aromatics unit, which is supplied by Mobil's adjacent refinery, also has the capacity to produce 330,000 tons (100 million gallons) of benzene in addition to the toluene. The availability of these aromatics could increase when a new continuous catalytic reformer comes on stream at the refinery later this year.
Mobil also produces TDI grade toluene, the highest purity grade (for use in making the polyurethane foam for furniture and packaging) at the company's Chalmette, Louisiana, refinery. When its new aromatics complex in Singapore comes on stream in 1993, Mobil will become a leading producer of aromatics with a total capacity of over 1.5 million tons (465 million gallons) worldwide.
The aromatics facility is part of Mobil Chemical Company's Petrochemicals Division. Mobil Chemical Company is a unit of Mobil Corporation.
