MOBIL REOPENS TWO SOUTH CENTRAL STATIONS AS PART OF ITS $5 MILLION EFFORT IN LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corp. today reopened two service stations destroyed by fire during the riots in South Central Los Angeles in April of 1992.
The two stations are part of a $5.5 million investment the company has made in South Central Los Angeles over the past year to rebuild its service stations. Of 52 Mobil stations damaged or destroyed, 48 have been repaired or rebuilt and are back in business.
Reopening ceremonies attended by city, county and state officials were held this morning at the stations at La Cienega/Cadillac and Manchester/Western.
"We moved quickly after the civil unrest to repair and rebuild our stations because we want to be here and we want to grow here," Ken Strong, the company's district marketing manager said. "The service stations and the products and jobs they provide are vital to the rebirth of South Central Los Angeles."
The Mobil stations were rebuilt by local minority contractors under the guidance of NOW Construction, a retail development contractor in Santa Fe Springs. The stations will be operated by the same Mobil dealers that have been in these locations for several years.
Representatives from the offices of State Sens. Teresa Hughes and Diane Watson, Mayor Richard Riordan and Chief of Police Willie Williams attended the reopening ceremonies.
Also attending were Assemblywoman Marguerite Archie-Hudson, Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, Councilmen Nate Holden and Mark Ridley-Thomas, Tony Salazar of Rebuild L.A., and Jim Schiffner, president, L.I.F.E. (Love Is Feeding Everyone).
Mobil also announced that its service station dealers this year will again raise money for L.I.F.E., an organization with food distribution and job training programs for South Central Los Angeles. Last year, Mobil and its dealers raised more than $300,000 for L.I.F.E.'s activities.
