MOBIL REFINERY IN JAPAN TO ADD NEW CRACKER AND DESULFURIZATION PLANT
FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) said today that its joint-venture refinery at Chiba, Japan, has begun work on a $270-million upgrading program which includes a residual fluid catalytic cracker (RFCC) and a gasoil desulfurization plant.
The new RFCC unit, with a capacity of 20 thousand barrels per day (TBD), will increase production of gasoline and distillates by upgrading lower-value residual fuels into higher quality products. Toyo Engineering Corporation has been selected as contractor for the project. Completion is planned for spring 1995.
The new 35-TBD capacity gasoil desulfurization plant will enable the refinery to produce 0.05-percent sulfur diesel fuel to meet future low- sulfur standards in Japan. The plant is being built by Tonen Technology K.K. and is scheduled for completion spring 1994.
The 125-TBD Kyokuto Petroleum Industries Ltd. Chiba refinery is located near Tokyo and is jointly owned, 50-50, by affiliates of Mobil Corporation and the Mitsui Group. The refinery provides products to both Mobil Sekiyu K.K., the Japanese marketing affiliate of Mobil Corporation, and Mitsui Oil and Gas Co. Ltd.
"The new units will enable us to meet future Japanese demand for premium quality fuels," said Robert O. Swanson, executive vice president for Mobil's Marketing and Refining Division, "and the investment reflects the continuing importance of the Japanese market to Mobil."
