MOBIL EXTENDS WGBH GRANT THROUGH 1997 FOR MASTERPIECE THEATRE AND MYSTERY!

 LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation has extended its grant to WGBH, Boston, for the presentation of Masterpiece Theatre and MYSTERY! on PBS through 1997, it was announced today by WGBH and Mobil. Both multi-award winning series have been solely underwritten by Mobil since they premiered -- Masterpiece Theatre in 1971, MYSTERY! in 1980.
 Masterpiece Theatre is the longest-running weekly prime-time TV drama series. Among the productions to be presented during this upcoming 24th season are:
 HARD TIMES, by Charles Dickens. A co-production with the BBC in two parts. Starring Alan Bates, Bob Peck and Beatie Edney. Written and directed Peter Barnes, the creator of "Enchanted April." The most modern of Dickens' novels; harsh in its social criticism and attack on Victorian commercialism.
 THE RECTOR'S WIFE. Three-part series based on the book by contemporary English writer and descendant of Anthony Trollope, Joanna Trollope. Starring Lindsay Duncan, who starred in "Traffik" and "A Year in Provence."
 Future projects include:
 THE BUCCANEERS. A co-production with the BBC of Edith Wharton's last unfinished novel in five episodes, to be filmed in the U.S. and U.K. with a British/American cast. Adapted by Maggie Wadey ("Adam Bede" and "Northanger Abbey"). An astutely observed and lavishly mounted story of a group American girls and their ambitious mothers who launch an invasion of the British aristocracy in search of titled husbands. Set in the U.S. and U.K. in the 1870s.
 In development:
 THE PALACE WALK TRILOGY. Based on the novels by Nagulb Mahfouz ("Palace Walk," "Palace of Desire," "Sugar Street"). Winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature. This is the family saga of three generations of wealthy Egyptians living in Cairo, set against the backdrop of 20th-century British colonial rule.
 Upcoming on MYSTERY! are new series of:
 MAIGRET. Based on the books by Georges Simenon and Michael Gambon.
 INSPECTOR ALLEYN MYSTERIES. Based on the books by Ngalo Marsh and starring Patrick Malahide. Titles: "Death in a White Tie" and "Death at the Bar."
 INSPECTOR MORSE with John Thaw.
 AGATHA CHRISTIE'S POIROT with David Suchet.
 Also on MYSTERY!'s agenda is:
 GALLOWGLASS. A three-part contemporary psychological thriller of manipulation and kidnapping by well-known author Ruth Randell writing as Barbara Vine.
 Russell Baker is the host of Masterpiece Theatre. Diana Rigg is the host of MYSTERY!
