AROUND a hundred mourners yesterday attended the funeral of gangster's wife Rita Thompson.

The wife of late Glasgow godfather Arthur Thompson Arthur Thompson, known as "the Godfather", was a notorious Glasgow-born gangster who made his mark on the streets of Scotland in the 1950s, and who then went on to take charge of organized crime for over thirty years. , died last week aged 72 after a battle with throat cancer.

At 1.30pm, five cars left her home in Provanmill Road in Glasgow's East End bound for nearby Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Rita was buried beside her husband, who died of a heart attack in 1993, son Arthur jnr, who was shot dead in 1991, and daughter Margaret, who died in 1989 of a heroin heroin (hĕ`rəwən), opiate drug synthesized from morphine (see narcotic). Originally produced in 1874, it was thought to be not only nonaddictive but useful as a cure for respiratory illness and morphine addiction, and capable of relieving  overdose overdose /over·dose/ (o´ver-dos?)

One local said: "It was a very low-key service. The family just wanted to get it over with."

Rita is survived by daughter Tracey,41, and son Billy,39.
