MK SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH CATERPILLAR FOR LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE PROGRAM
BOISE, Idaho, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE:

MRN) announced today that it has signed an agreement with Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) to use state-of-the-art Caterpillar engines in railroad locomotives manufactured by MK.
The exclusive agreement calls for the use of three sizes of Caterpillar engines in MK-manufactured locomotives, including switcher, commuter and high-horsepower freight units.
"We see a promising market for new locomotives over the next eight to 10 years and this agreement brings together two companies with long and successful histories in the rail business," said William J. Agee, MK chairman and chief executive officer.
The market for the powerful 5,000 horsepower mainline freight locomotives is especially promising because there is no other U.S. manufacturer of comparable horsepower units. In addition, the switching locomotives will be powered with liquid natural gas which addresses air quality standards in metropolitan areas.
For marketing purposes, MK will design and manufacture three prototype locomotives with three sizes of Caterpillar engines. They will include a 5,000-horsepower freight locomotive; a 2,300-horsepower commuter locomotive, both diesel-powered; and a 1,200-horsepower, natural gas-powered switcher.
Manufacture of the prototypes and later full-production work will be carried out at MK's industrial complex at Boise.
Agee said the locomotives will be marketed in North America.
