MK RECOMMENDED FOR CONTRACT TO BUILD 50 TO 80 NEW CARS FOR BART; STAFF FINDS MK'S TECHNICAL RATING AND BID SUPERIOR TO JAPANESE COMPETITORS'
BOISE, Idaho, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- William J. Agee, chairman and chief executive officer of Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE: MRN), today announced that the staff of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has recommended MK for a contract to manufacture 50 to 80 new transit cars after finding that MK was the best qualified bidder, with the superior technical rating, the lowest price and highest overall evaluation score. BART will determine the final number of cars to be built.
The staff recommendation will be presented to the BART board for approval on March 17. BART is a commuter rail system serving the San Francisco Bay Area.
The value of the base contract could exceed $140 million and there are options for additional cars that could bring total production to 250 vehicles.
"We are especially pleased that MK was rated technologically superior to our competitors, Kinki/Sharyo and Kawasaki, and that our bid was the most competitive," said Agee.
"MK is totally committed to the rail transit industry in this country, and California is one of the most important segments of this market," Agee said. "We intend to establish a facility in the Bay Area to build both the BART and Caltrans cars."
Last month, MK won a $155-million contract to build 88 new cars for the California Department of Transportation.
The first BART cars will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1994 and the work is scheduled for completion in late 1995. The cars will be produced at the rate of eight per month.
At a length of 70 feet, the cars will be electrically powered, air conditioned, and will be interchangeable with the district's existing fleet.
When MK establishes the Bay Area rail car facility, it will join a facility soon to be opened in Chicago and an existing MK industrial complex in Hornell, N.Y. These facilities will establish MK's nationwide network for rail-car manufacturing which will serve eastern, midwest and western U.S. regions for decades to come.
Once the Chicago plant is opened, MK will begin building cars for a recently received $380-million contract for a 313-car order from Metra, a commuter line serving northeastern Illinois.
