MK: NUMBER ONE NATIONALLY IN TRANSPORTATION,
RANKS SEVENTH OVERALL IN U.S. MARKET
BOISE, Idaho, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent ranking of the top 400 U.S. contractors placed Morrison Knudsen (MK) (NYSE: MK) at the pinnacle in the transportation market, according to Engineering News- Record (ENR), a nationwide journal, MK said today. MK also ranked fifth in the power market and vaulted to seventh overall among all American contractors.
The rankings, listed in the May 25 edition of ENR, confirm MK's ascendancy as a national leader in the engineering and construction industry. MK is positioned in the top 15 in three of four markets: first in transportation, fifth in power and 13 in hazardous waste. The overall ranking showed MK as having nearly $10-billion worth of projects under development in 1991.
"Our excellent market position across the board is a clear sign that our strategy and hard work are paying off," said William J. Agee, MK chairman and chief executive officer.
MK's lead in transportation could widen with the award of a contract to build an 8.27-mile bridge to Prince Edward Island in Canada. The company was notified on May 27 that it was the apparent low bidder on the project, which will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canadian history. Other major transportation projects include construction of the Boston Harbor tunnels, and design of light-rail projects in Dallas, New York and San Diego.
MK's top five ranking in the power market underscored the company's position in both the domestic and international arena. In 1991, work was added in the Tennessee Valley, Nepal, China and at Itaipu in South America -- the world's largest hydro development.
Environmentally, MK's ascent into the top 20 was propelled largely by a portion of a $1-billion nuclear-waste disposal program in Nevada and a $50-million contract for hazardous-waste cleanup at an aluminum production facility.
Morrison Knudsen Corp. is an international company serving the environmental, industrial process, power and transportation markets with complete development, design/engineering, construction, operating and financial services.
