MITSUBISHI MOTORS ANNOUNCES PRICING FOR ALL-NEW 1994 GALANT; DEBUT MARKS PREDOMINANT U.S. PRODUCTION FOR MITSUBISHI PASSENGER CAR SALES

CYPRESS, Calif., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA) today announced pricing for its completely redesigned 1994 Galant four-door sedan. Galant is available in four trim levels.
The price leader S model is offered at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $13,600; followed by the ES with standard full power accessories, air conditioning and automatic transmission at $16,775; the LS, with luxury trim, alloy wheels and a one-touch power sunroof, at $18,215; and the performance model GS, with increased power, a sport-tuned suspension and rear spoiler at $20,494.
In addition to distinctive new styling and increased roominess, the front-wheel-drive Galant advances with significant new safety and engineering features that include driver's and front passenger's air bags, a four-wheel multilink independent suspension and four-valve- per-cylinder engine technology in all models, with an antilock braking system (ABS) available in ES, LS and GS models.
Entering the market as a key model for Mitsubishi Motors in the 1990s, and as the company's only model offered in the increasingly competitive mid-size segment, the Galant introduction marks a move by Mitsubishi Motors to predominantly U.S. production for its U.S. passenger car sales. Galant is built at Mitsubishi Motors' Diamond- Star Motors assembly plant in Normal, Ill.
"With Galant produced along with our Eclipse model at Diamond- Star Motors, our two largest volume vehicles are originating from the United States," said Richard D. Recchia, executive vice president and chief operating officer for MMSA.
Recchia noted that the addition of Galant will increase Mitsubishi Motors' domestic production to nearly 60 percent of its total volume. Additionally, the U.S.-built Galant will be shipped for sale in world markets, including Europe and Taiwan.
Built with increased dimensions throughout, Galant now has an overall length measuring 187 inches, a 103.7-inch wheel base and an overall width of 68.1 inches. While significantly enlarged for 1994 at 2,755 pounds, the new Galant is only 43 pounds heavier than its predecessor. With a reduction of the coefficient of drag from 0.35 to a very low 0.29, it is also more aerodynamic.
All Galant models except for the sporty GS version feature Mitsubishi's new 2.4-liter, four-cylinder single overhead-cam (SOHC) powerplant that provides increased efficiency from a four-valve-per- cylinder design, producing 141 horsepower. The driving enthusiast's Galant GS model adds a double overhead-cam (DOHC) version of the 2.4-liter engine and boosts output up to 160 horsepower.
Galant models equipped with the four-speed overdrive automatic transmission feature a sophisticated new computer control called "Fuzzy Logic." The Fuzzy Logic microprocessor enhances driving satisfaction by calibrating shift points to more precisely match driving circumstances, including unique downshifts from fourth to third to help the driver decelerate when going downhill. The system also prevents excessive upshifting and downshifting when driving uphill on windy roads.
Environmental engineering in Galant is also a priority that is exhibited in the new model's use of extended-life fluids, extensive use of recyclable components and elimination of asbestos materials in engine gaskets. In addition, to help reduce damage to the ozone layer, Mitsubishi has adopted the new R-134a non-chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) air conditioner refrigerant and eliminated CFC use in the seats and other component molding processes.
As an early introduction for Mitsubishi Motors' 1994 line-up, Galant models are scheduled for arrival in dealers' showrooms across the nation during June of 1993.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, mid-size sedans, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
