MITSUBISHI MOTORS' SALES REACH 10,462 UNITS FOR AUGUST --
COMPANY OPTIMISTIC FOR INCREASED MOMENTUM AS '93 MODELS ARRIVE
CYPRESS, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA) today announced vehicle sales of 10,462 units for the month of August, reflecting a 31 percent decrease in sales from a year earlier and evidence of wavering consumer confidence amidst a faltering economy. While the company reported an overall decline in sales, some models pierced the tough sales climate with increased momentum over last year's figures.
"We witnessed one of our toughest sales months of the year during August, with floor traffic down and a shortage of Diamantes due to record sales of that model in July," said Kim Custer, manager of public relations for MMSA. "Yet, our dealers persevered amidst declining showroom traffic and actually experienced substantial sales gains in several segments, including our flagship 3000GT and Montero models."
The bright spots in the Mitsubishi line up also took in the company's EXPO LRV sport wagon model, which experienced a 131 percent increase over the period a year earlier. The 3000GT grand touring sports car achieved sales of 1,117 units, representing a 75 percent advance over last year, while the Montero sport/utility model sales went up 18 percent with 612 units for the month.
Custer noted that although consumer apprehension about the economy has continued, Mitsubishi Motors is optimistic about a resurgence in the sales pace through the remainder of the year. "We anticipate increased consumer enthusiasm about our 1993 products that are just now arriving in dealer showrooms, including the introduction of our new generation of affordable Mirage subcompact models," Custer said.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc., was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, compacts, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
