Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The competition for a championship comes a few months earlier this season.

But the rivals are back in the same field when they compete in the Newbury Park Mistletoe mistletoe, common name for the Loranthaceae, a family of chiefly tropical hemiparasitic herbs and shrubs with leathery evergreen leaves and waxy white berries. They have green leaves, but they manufacture only part of the nutrients they require.  Classic, beginning today.

The 24-team tournament features one of the best opportunities for teams to face the toughest local competiton as well as that of teams from as far away as San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856. . ``It's pretty competitve,'' Newbury Park coach Jeff Warshaw said of the fourth-year tournament that has expanded its field each year as the sport in just its third season as an offical Southern Section event - grows in popularity.

Teams are divided into eight three-team groupings for pool play at Newbury Park and Agoura the first two days, with the top teams advancing to Saturday's winners' bracket at Newbury Park. The championship game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Harvard-Westlake won the title last year and is a threat to do so again with an experienced team that includes 1998-99 Daily News Player of the Year Jeanine Jackson. The senior helped the Wolverines go 71-5 and win three league titles in their first three seasons. No local team has a chance of facing Harvard-Westlake until Saturday.

Agoura would likely have to wait until the final for a rematch REMATCH Cardiology Clinical trials–Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance Therapy as an alternative in Congestive Heart failure–related to use of a portable, electric left ventricular-assist system–LVAS–eg, HeartMate®  with the Wolverines if both teams win their pool, and the Chargers are among those capable of advancing that far. Agoura started its season with 19-9 victory against Ventura on Tuesday and opens tournament play at home today at 3:45 p.m. against Redondo.

Newbury Park was a .500 team that finished third in the Marmonte last season, but a scoring spree by senior Katy Fick and solid play by teammates, including Jennifer Martens, Erin Campbell and goalie Rachel Hutchings, have the Panthers (3-1) playing like contenders. The Panthers play in the tournament's opening game at Newbury Park at 3 p.m. against Calabasas, then face Lompoc at 6 p.m.

Royal is the lone team from the area to play Friday and opens with a 3 p.m. contest against La Canada at Newbury Park.
