MISSION CRITICAL LINUX INTROS CONVOLO CLUSTER NETGUARD EDITION.

Mission Critical Linux, Inc. has announced the availability of Convolo Cluster NetGuard Edition Version 1.0, the most extensible and flexible Linux cluster solution on the market. NetGuard Edition is designed for Linux and provides several technology "firsts", including support for very large configurations and failure recovery times measured in milliseconds.

NetGuard Edition is the newest member of Mission Critical Linux's growing family of Convolo Cluster products. NetGuard Edition provides support for up to 128 systems, and is designed for applications that require very rapid response to failures and do not require shared disk storage. Examples include IP-intensive switching applications, telephony and streaming media See streaming audio, streaming video and digital media hub.  applications, Web server farms, and compute intensive environments. DataGuard Edition is targeted at commercial application environments that require shared disk storage, such as databases and file & print servers. The Convolo family of products is designed to meet any high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  requirement in the Linux market.

Mission Critical Linux has developed NetGuard Edition to provide high availability for IP-centric applications. It is particularly well suited for deployment on large-scale "Blade" (or dense) server configurations. NetGuard Edition clusters can start with as few as two systems and can be expanded up to 128 systems. In addition to failover, NetGuard Edition provides a sophisticated IP load balancing The fine tuning of a computer system, network or disk subsystem in order to more evenly distribute the data and/or processing across available resources. For example, in clustering, load balancing might distribute the incoming transactions evenly to all servers, or it might redirect them  capability, thus eliminating the requirement to implement load balancing with additional hardware or software.

NetGuard Edition is certified on all the major Linux.distributions, and supports Intel IA-32 and Itanium architectures. The product supports multiple network interface cards (NICs) per server, and provides intra-server failover of IP and MAC addresses in the case of NIC (1) (Network Interface Card) See network adapter. See also InterNIC.

failure. In the case of server failure the product provides IP and application service failover. Failover times are configurable, but generally on the order of 250 milliseconds.

NetGuard Edition features include a sophisticated membership algorithm, active-passive and active-active failover configurations, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  event notification Event notification is a term used in conjunction with communications software for linking applications that generate small messages (the "events") to applications that monitor the associated conditions and may take actions triggered by events. , and cascading service failover with automatic failback. "We have had a lot of demand for a very fast reacting application failover capability that can be deployed across today's dense server farms. Customers realize that Linux combined with highly responsive clustering is a perfect fit for these high volume environments," said Brian Stevens, Chief Technology Officer at Mission Critical Linux, Inc. "We have a lot of very talented cluster engineers in the company and have leveraged their skills to build a really impressive, high performance product. There's nothing in the market that can hold a candle to NetGuard Edition from either a technical or a business viewpoint - it's simply in a class of its own."

"An R&D project at Intel for its future server product line has used the Convolo NetGuard Edition product and is excited about its ability to boost the reliability and availability of those servers." - Intel Enterprise Product Group, Telco Server Division.

"NetGuard Edition is the killer application Killer Application

Killer application or "killer app" is a buzzword that describes a software application that surpasses all of its competitors.
