MISSION COLLEGE READY TO GROW BOARD OKS MASTER PLAN, TRAFFIC RELIEF.

Byline: SUSAN ABRAM Staff Writer

A proposal to expand Los Angeles Mission College Los Angeles Mission College is a two-year community college located in Sylmar, California neighborhood of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, United States. It is part of the Los Angeles Community College District.  took a big step forward Wednesday when community college officials approved a master plan and a final environmental impact report for the project.

Despite some concerns and questions from residents about the impact from traffic, the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  board unanimously backed the measures that are needed to proceed with plans for a health and fitness center, classrooms and a parking garage for the 7,300-student, 20- year-old campus.

Still, a good chunk of the plan depends on land acquisitions still not finalized See finalization. , including a 7-acre parcel along the southeastern portion of Eldridge Avenue and Harding Street.

That land was purchased by Comstock Homes last April to build 41 homes.

College district officials want to obtain the parcel through eminent-domain proceedings.

Another swath at Eldridge Avenue and Harding Street, once owned by St. Ephraim's Syrian Church, was recently acquired by the college district.

Members of the Sylmar Neighborhood Council asked the board to postpone post·pone

District officials expect 15,000 students to attend Mission College after construction is completed.

``I think you are doing the wrong thing for the right reasons,'' Ellie Brooks, president of the Sylmar council, told the board, which met at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

Brooks said because the school is wedged wedged - 1. To be stuck, incapable of proceeding without help. This is different from having crashed. But district officials said they believe they have found ways to mitigate the impact by installing traffic signals, adding signs and realigning some streets.

``The analysis in this environmental impact report has been thorough,'' said Larry Eisenberg, executive director of facilities, planning and development for college district. ``As for traffic issues, we've identified mitigation as well as we can. By the time we're done, the traffic flow will be better than it is now.''

Expansion of Mission College has been stalled for years after the district abandoned a land swap deal with Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County government and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Sylmar campus is under a tight deadline to begin construction because its funding comes from the college's $176 million share of the $2.2 billion in funds from Proposition A passed in 2001 and Proposition AA in 2003. Construction must begin by April, Eisenberg has said.

The board president, Michael Waxman, assured residents that district officials would remain attentive at·ten·tive

to their concerns if construction begins.

``We want to be a good neighbor to everyone,'' Waxman said. ``The dialogue doesn't end with the completion of the environmental impact report.''

Los Angeles Community College District Chancellor Darroch ``Rocky'' Young has said he would like to see construction begin before he retires in August.
