But the coach for Mission College's Culinary Youth Team was pleased nonetheless with his group's performance.

``Nationally, they put Mission College on the map,'' said Chef Rudy Garcia, the team's coach, noting that the judges praised the Mission team's ``elegant'' menu during the July 23 competition.

Garcia also noted that the Mission College team was the youngest of the eight teams, and that none of the students had ever competed before. Team members are Stephen Gillanders, 19, Matthew Anderson, 20, Theresa Moses, 19, Adria Macias, 19, and Mary Ann Shenouda, 20.

Garcia has high hopes for the team. He plans to send the group to compete in the American Culinary Federation's Hot Food regional competition in October.
