MISSING HIKERS FOUND; DAD, 5 KIDS ALL COLD, BUT SAFE.

Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. Sheriff's search and rescue team members and a sheriff's helicopter began searching about noon Tuesday near Vincent Gap, west of Wrightwood, for Rick English, 40, his three children and his children's two friends.

``It was probably nice and warm when they left, but within about the last 24 hours, there's been at least a foot of snow dumped up there,'' said sheriff's Deputy Daryl Bonsall. ``That's dangerous even for an experienced hiker. Five of those up there are just kids.''

Although the group was not due home from its five-day trek until Wednesday, the cold spring storm that moved into Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  on Monday dumped more than a foot of snow on the area and dropped temperatures to below freezing.

English's father called the Palmdale sheriff's station about 10 a.m. Tuesday and asked deputies to check on the welfare of his son and grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations.  weather was our main concern,'' said Bonsall.

Sheriff's Deputy Donald Self said searchers found the campers about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

``They seem to be in fine condition,'' Self said. ``They had been in the snow and they were cold and tired. They asked for help carrying out some of their gear, but they were hiking out on their own.''

After a Caltrans snowplow cleared the Angeles Crest Highway The Angeles Crest Highway is a two-lane (one lane of travel in each direction) segment of California State Route 2 in the United States. The road is 66 miles in length, with its western terminus at the intersection at Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge and its eastern  west of the Mountain High ski resort Tuesday, a deputy discovered English's truck at the Vincent Gap parking area but could not locate any of the hikers.

The Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and  passes through the area, and the parking lot is popular in the summer among hikers climbing nearby 9,399-foot-high Mount Baden-Powell.

A helicopter began the initial search while a ground search and rescue team, made up primarily of reserve deputies, was called in.

Deputies reported that the snow in the area was knee-deep, and the helicopter was hampered by wind and clouds cloaking the mountains. Searchers clad in winter gear set out along two trails leading out of the parking lot.

English's father told deputies that his son was an experienced hiker and had spent a great deal of time trekking through the Sierra Nevada Sierra Nevada, mountain range, Spain
