UNVEIL PLANS FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND CASINO CENTER
BRIDGEPORT, Conn., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Mirage Resorts Incorporated unveiled its long-anticipated plans today for a multi- million dollar entertainment and casino center in Bridgeport.
The center, which will be called the Bridgeport Sporting Club, will be a joint venture between Mirage Resorts and the Bridgeport Pari-Mutuel Complex. Pending the necessary enabling legislation expected to be passed in the 1993 session of the Connecticut General Assembly, it will be built at and adjacent to the existing facilities of the Bridgeport Jai Alai fronton.
Details of the project and the joint venture were announced by Mirage Resorts Chairman Stephen A. Wynn and Bridgeport Pari-mutuel Complex President A. Robert Zeff.
"The Bridgeport Sporting Club is something new, something different," Wynn said as he explained details of the project depicted on architectural renderings. "It will set a standard by which entertainment and casino resorts on the East Coast will be measured. It will exemplify the type of major attraction created when you combine casino and pari-mutuel gaming with family recreation and entertainment amenities catering to a wide range of ages."
Zeff, who founded Bridgeport Jai Alai in 1976, said that the joint venture will provide a powerful economic stimulus for Bridgeport businesses.
"Our estimates call for the creation of 6,000 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect jobs, not counting several thousands construction jobs that will be needed for the center," Zeff said. "Factor in projections for up to 20,000 visitors a day, and the center clearly is the long-term shot in the arm that this community needs."
The plans that Wynn and Zeff unveiled during a luncheon meeting call for a long, two-level complex entered via a tree-lined boulevard winding along the Pequonnock River. The project's low skyline will be punctuated with cornices and turrets reminiscent of traditional New England residential design.
In addition to access from major thoroughfares such as Interstate 95, plans include a marina and a port for a jetfoil that would whisk visitors across Long Island Sound in 15 to 20 minutes.
Wynn credited Jon A. Jerde, an internationally respected architect and urban planner, with creating a complex that not only acts as a focal point for the community but captures the unique flavor of the Connecticut coast.
"The Sporting Club's architecture is a re-creation of the rambling, shingle-style resorts that dot the state's seaside communities," Wynn said. "With its glistening cornices, dark green tile roof and ornate architectural detailing, it combines a gracious, comfortable feel of a bay-front home with grand public spaces that create visual excitement and energy because they're specifically designed for people to have fun and be entertained."
The complex is organized along a glass-enclosed pedestrian street. The atrium-like space will include family oriented attractions such as an ice skating rink and indoor amusement center as well as retail stores.
Entrances to a performing theater, greyhound race track, nightclubs, cinemas and casino gaming areas will lead off the pedestrian street at two levels. There will also be a simulcast facility which will enable patrons to view and wager on various live racing events taking place all over the world. An adjoining multi-level hotel will have convenient access to all activities along the pedestrian mall.
Wynn said that The Sporting Club is a result of long, serious consideration of the role that Mirage Resorts could play in helping revive Bridgeport's economy. As an example, he pointed out that the joint venture between Mirage Resorts and the Bridgeport Pari-mutuel Complex represents long-term support for an existing company that provides jobs and tax revenues.
Wynn also said that the development is especially responsive to the natural resource the city has in its waterfront.
"The Bridgeport Harbor has been the focus of forward-thinking community leaders who have created a waterfront redevelopment plan," Wynn said. "The Sporting Club builds on that momentum and gives the city an opportunity to plug into some very positive energy that will be provided by The Sporting Club."
He stressed that the development is not a cure-all for Bridgeport's economic challenges but rather a significant first step that can create lasting opportunities and spur economic growth in a part of the city that needs it most.
"We've been working for many months to develop a solution that incorporates the best of what Bridgeport has to offer with hard realities like the need for quality jobs and a project that can make substantial contributions to the area's tax base," he said. "We share the pride of the business and civic leaders who are dedicated to making their home a better place, and we intend for The Sporting Club to stand as a symbol reconginzing that commitment to Bridgeport's new beginning."
