MINOR LEAGUE TEAM HERE? PHOENIX FIRM PROPOSES MOVE.

 team to Santa Clarita, city officials said Thursday.

Tri-Century Baseball Inc. will ask the Santa Clarita City Council on Tuesday for the exclusive right to work over the next two years to draw a professional team to the area.

``While it's very exciting, it is very, very preliminary,'' said Mayor Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he

Smyth said he was first approached with the idea to bring professional baseball to Santa Clarita by family friend and Saugus resident Dave Trogan.

``It would be a great thing for the city to have a team to call its own,'' Trogan said.

Tri-Century owner Jay Hemond did not return phone messages seeking comment Thursday.

Formal discussions about which minor league team would move to Santa Clarita, where a stadium would be located or what role the city would play in wooing a team have not been held, said Ken Striplin, assistant to City Manager Ken Pulskamp.

Baseball officials said none of the 250 minor league teams have requested to move to Santa Clarita.

The City Council is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.
